Movie Review and Giveaway: Unstoppable

February 7, 2014

Why do bad things happen to good people? How could God allow sadness, pain, and suffering to penetrate the lives of his children whom he claims to love? These questions are addressed as we look at God's story from the very beginning. I had the opportunity to review the movie Unstoppable by Kirk Cameron. If you haven't seen it yet, you will have the opportunity to win a DVD copy now!

About Unstoppable

Inspired by the death of Cameron's close friend who subbumbed to cancer at the age of 15, Kirk takes viewers on an inspiring and hope-filled visual journey to better understand the biggest doubt-raising question in faith. Going back to the beginning--literally--Kirk investigates the origins of good and evil and how they impact our lives...and our eternities. Unstoppable: A Live Event with Kirk Cameron sold a staggering 260,000 tickets and reached a theatrical gross of over $3.2 million. Now it is available in DVD format.

The Review
“This is the faith-wrecking question of so many people. This is the question that turns Christians into Atheists. Why does God allow bad things to happen to good people? ...To answer to that question requires understanding the character and nature of God.” – Kirk Cameron
Immediately, I was amazed at the openness of Kirk as he describes the moment he heard that his friend Matthew had passed away. Having seen him on screen in an acting role, and in a handful of interviews, I had never seen him more real than in this movie.

The intensity of this presentation caused me to take breaks so that I could absorb all of the content more thoroughly. Then, I watched it again in it's entirety. From the creation of Adam and Eve, to the fall, to the murder of Abel by his brother Cain -- the images shown are more mature than what should be seen by small children.

During the portrayal of the fall, Kirk offers a surprising perspective:
“This is the ultimate breakdown of a man’s responsibility. This is a story of a man throwing his wife under the bus and using her as a guinea pig in the human experiment. Adam allows his wife to be deceived by the serpent. He fails to protect her. He fails to guard her, and he watches while he stands there with her…and watches her eat.”
Wow! Such strong words for a husband. Typically in society and even in some churches, Eve is blamed for the decision to eat the forbidden fruit as if Adam was nowhere around.

Of course, the story doesn’t stop there. God provides a “new” Adam by providing his only son Jesus as the method by which to restore relationship with mankind. Kirk said this about Jesus:
“This is the man that God promised Eve in the garden would come as one of her descendants and crush the serpent’s head. Precisely what her husband Adam did not do. … Adam failed to protect her in the garden. Jesus succeeds and is victorious in a garden, and he protects his bride. … He is the one who is going to reverse the curse. This is the new and better Adam – the last Adam who is going to…restore the whole world to its maker.”
The movie goes on to explain how Jesus understands what hurting people go through, having been there himself at the cross. He took evil upon himself and died for his enemies. He died for all of us. He conquered evil, sin, and death through his resurrection.

Ultimately, Jesus knows us and knows our hurts. He gives us the strength to endure suffering. God’s glory is revealed in us to others who are seeking Him.
