Let's Get Real: A Lesson In Emotion

May 18, 2013

Some days are just plain stressful, don't you agree? Schedules are too busy, the house is a mess, communication is lacking or loud depending on the moment, and sometimes it's difficult to get it all done. If this sounds like your house, you are definitely not alone. Here is the lesson I am working through which I hope encourages you.

Let me begin by saying that I am far from perfect. While I try to display my "super hero" image outwardly, I sink into a small, little place in which I feel secure when no one is looking. In efforts to show everyone I have it together, in honesty I really don't. How did I get here?

The enemy has been messing with my family for several years now. We've all heard that God wouldn't let us go through something unless He knows we can endure it. Wow! He must really think we can handle it! In our home, we have experienced long-term unemployment, financial stress, major surgery, home burglary, and separation. Our kids have had the stress of seeing our stress, having their dad living out of state for a year, and me trying to keep it all together for them. All of this led to an emotional roller coaster, lacking in stability on a regular basis.

Despite our bumpy ride, I am learning that I cannot, and must never, make major decisions while emotionally spent. I also understand that I have spent time in the pit of despair and depression way too long. I am reminded of a passage of scripture that I had once memorized as a teen, but never thought I needed it like I need it now. It's Psalm 40. (Click here to read it.)

In my humanness I can only see part of the whole picture. I can only see what I am currently experiencing. This season is difficult for us, however I know that I must stay close to God and remember His promises every day.

I hope you will find comfort, as I have, in knowing that God is for you, not against you. If you are in the middle of a difficult time, remember "this too shall pass".

"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope." Jeremiah 29:11
