If you have a smooth-top range in your kitchen, as we do, then you know that it sometimes can be difficult to clean. Cleaners specifically made for these surfaces work similar to car wax, but are expensive and require some muscle to get the crusty, cooked-on food removed.
We have found that rather than buying that "special" cleaner, using baking soda and lemon juice works the best. Here's how to use it. First, sprinkle some baking soda directly onto the surface of your cook top. Then take a cap full of lemon juice and poor it onto the baking soda. It will begin to bubble. Leave it on for a few seconds, then take a clean, damp washcloth to rub in the mixture. You will notice that the crusty, cooked-on food is easily removed from your cook top.
After wiping off the mixture, rinse the washcloth thoroughly. If you notice a haze on your cook top, continue to wipe the surface with warm water until the haze is gone.
If it's been a while since you've cleaned it, and there is significant build-up, then you will need to leave the baking soda and lemon juice on a little longer before you rub it in. Also, you may have to increase the amount of baking soda and/or lemon juice you are applying. It's better to add smaller amounts of lemon juice than to add too much. Once you get the surface clean, future cleanings will be simpler and less time consuming.
This method takes a lot less effort, and it really works well. To purchase one bottle of lemon juice and one box of baking soda costs much less than a bottle of the smooth-top cleaner and you will have a much larger quantity to use later.
