Watch Price Per Ounce

May 18, 2012

When you go into your local superstore, what number do you look at? The price in yellow? Or the price in orange?

While the yellow price is what you are paying at the register, look at the orange price because that tells you what you are paying per ounce. Should spend $0.22 per ounce for a large package, or $0.35 to $0.40 per ounce for a smaller package or a different brand?

Cheese slices are pictured here. If your family uses cheese frequently, then it makes sense to purchase the larger package because you will save money in the long run. If your family uses cheese, but not all the time, you have the option of freezing part of the package, thus still saving you money.

American cheese slices will generally keep for a long period of time in your refrigerator. If you prefer to freeze the unused portion of cheese slices, keep the slices wrapped in the original packaging and place them into a heavy-duty zipper storage bag. You can freeze them up to three months and should be thawed in the refrigerator the night before you plan to use them.

  1. This is a great post. My Dad taught me about this when I was young and I'm teaching my kids about this now.
